10 minutes, 10 revealing questions! Get to know the United Way UK team

Name: Becca Sims

Role: Programme Manager

  1. When did you join the team at United Way UK?

    October 2019

  2. What were you doing before that and what led you to this role?

I had just returned from living and working in Uganda and was looking for a new opportunity as I settled back into life in the UK.

  3. What does your role entail day to day?

I work across all of our projects so no day is ever the same! One day I can be on-site installing a Reading Oasis the next putting together a proposal for our next big project.

  4. What challenges do you face within the role?

We have lots of amazing projects and sometimes there are competing factors so I have to be very organised and good at prioritising to ensure we deliver all effectively and to a great standard.

  5. What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

I feel very fortunate that my role lets me see the amazing impact we have first-hand. Out of all of our team, my role allows for the most time on project, supporting with delivery on site and getting to work with some amazing volunteers, schools and charities.

  6. Tell us about the stand out moments from United Way UK projects you’ve worked on –

There are quite a few! If I have to pick, it will have to be a day in Nottingham at our partner, John Deere. We were delivering 2 projects simultaneously, Business Mentoring with 2 local schools and food packing for a food bank network in the city. Getting to hear from the beneficiaries and volunteers about how much these opportunities meant to both groups was very special.

  7. What do you love most about working at United Way UK?

We have an incredible team. I am always so proud of what we achieve together and I am looking forward to expanding the team in the coming months and welcoming 2 new colleagues.

  8. Who and/or what’s your biggest inspiration?

Nadia Nadim is a big inspiration of mine. I would encourage you to Google her if you haven’t heard her name before!

  9. Do you have any passion projects outside of work?

I am a very big sports fan, football in particular, and can talk at length about my team Watford FC. I am a big believer in the power of sport and bringing equality to the game.

  10. Describe yourself in one word:

    Determined.
